Probably the same reason there's St Patrick's Day celebrations in the rest of the world.

Surely this is just politics?
Every nationality has a festival day/ weekend but for it to be upgraded to city-wide and financially backed just means politics in motion.
Where I grew up it was Italians, they owned everything and dominated local council. Nobody complained.
