I used to where light gray tee shirts while working under the Florida sun with suspenders (braces) to support my tool belt and enough UV rays made it through the shirt that the suspenders left a light X on my back while the surrounding area was lightly tanned.

Colour seems to make no difference, in my testing, to ultraviolet light.
