If you zoom in you can see individual grains of colored sand.

This is also a Tibetan sand mandala. The name Chenrezig is the Tibetan name of the Buddha Of Compassion, known in Sanskrit as Avalokiteshvara literally meaning "Lord who looks down." It's when God cries seeing suffering in the world.
