It looks like each bar is two bars, with a threaded end such that if you were to tighten it the outer bar would flex outwards.

Reminds me of something like a concrete anchor though these look much too thin.

Yep, 90 got it alright. They are truss rods for guitar necks. These are a type of dual action rod. I think these particular pieces are made for Mosrite guitars.

yeah, he's cool. he's been broke as hell and working his new job getting the essentials paid up. his internet has been off, but at least that will get him off of the BS wireless contract connect he had, and will allow him to get on a satellite (much better) connect i think in a week or 2.
