Average nuclear power plant with 1 cooling tower, say 900 megawatts.
So if you ever out seven together like that (why would you) then...
...almost 1000 wind turbines or 60 million solar panels.

Apparently Ratcliffe power station was the UKs last coal station, closing last year; 2000MW.

That would've been nasty to live near.

I actually really like the look of wind turbines. I've done a number of country rides near then etc. But I'm under no illusion that they can power the country.

I think nuclear power was abandoned, or nearly so, too soon but the fear of it was understandable and perhaps warranted given the technology in the 80's. In the meantime, we've been destroying the atmosphere of the entire planet because of fears of relatively localized destruction a nuclear incident causes. Smaller, more widely separated nuclear plants may be the way to go and I believe there are efforts in that direction - I have aircraft carriers and their powerplants that could power small cities in mind as a template. Maybe fusion will soon become achievable but I'm not holding my breath. Wind, solar, hydro, and nuclear should be utilized to eliminate burning fuels as much as possible to save the environment and stretch the finite resource that are fossil fuels. And for the majority of those people who drive their cars to work and run errands, rarely going farther than a few miles from home, electric vehicles seem practical and even desirable because of their lower need of maintenance and just to cut out those inconvenient stops to fill the tank - just charge the car overnight like we've been doing with our phones the last few decades.. My longest commute in my working years was about 25 miles/40km round trip, many years less than that, and I was always one to not make extra trips, doing whatever shopping while on my commute. How much could someone doing that today save by not maintaining an internal combustion engine or feeding its thirst for fuel, oil, coolant, and need to be otherwise taken care of. I'm also amused by the place in the great red state of Florida, a sprawling development called The Villages that is mostly populated by seniors who are mostly of the red variety, many of whom use electric golf carts to run their errands.

Considering we are all in the matrix (except DK who unplugged) and WE are the power source, what does it really matter?
